n a daring incident that took place in Uppala, Kasaragod, Kerala on Wednesday, ₹50 lakh was stolen from a van while it was transporting cash to fill cash vending machines. The theft occurred outside an Axis Bank ATM around 2 p.m. The van belonged to a private agency called Secure Valley and surprisingly, it arrived at the location without any security personnel.
According to an officer from the Manjeshwar police station, the theft can be attributed to a security lapse on the part of the private agency’s staff. The staff was supposed to fill ₹20 lakh in a bank ATM, but they mistakenly took out two bundles of ₹50 lakh each. They took one bundle to the ATM and left the other on the back seat of the vehicle. Although the vehicle was locked, there was no one inside it and there was no grille on the rear windows. Taking advantage of this vulnerability, the thief broke the right side rear window and made off with the cash bundle that was left unattended.
The police have apprehended the driver of the van and have seized the vehicle as part of their investigation. District Police Chief P Bijoy has stated that there is indication that only one person was involved in the robbery. However, the investigation has been challenging due to several CCTV cameras in the area not functioning properly due to ongoing road construction work. The Manjeshwar police are focusing their investigation on the few active CCTVs in the vicinity.
