Historic Reform for India's Banking Sector!
🏦 Historic Reform for India's Banking Sector! 🇮🇳
The Lok Sabha has passed the Bankers' Books Evidence Bill, 2026, replacing the 135-year-old Bankers' Books Evidence Act, 1891.
📌 What changes?
✅ Digital & electronic bank records are now legally valid evidence in courts.
✅ Cloud-based, virtual, and future digital banking records are officially recognized.
✅ Certified electronic copies have the same legal status as certified paper records.
✅ Authentication through manual, electronic, or digital signatures is allowed.
✅ Banks can submit records in electronic or physical form, helping speed up legal proceedings.
✅ The Central Government can extend these provisions to other financial institutions if needed.
💡 Why is this important?
The old law was made in 1891, when banking was entirely paper-based. This new legislation modernizes India's legal framework for the digital banking era, reduces paperwork, improves operational efficiency, and supports faster resolution of court cases involving bank records.
📲 A major step towards a smarter, paperless, and technology-driven banking system.
