Bank frauds on the rise under Modi government

The on Monday alleged that banking frauds have risen under the Modi government and accused it of allowing the fraudsters to either continue functioning in the country or leave.

Citing an (RBI) report, spokesperson Gourav Vallabh alleged that there have been to the tune of 5 trillion rupees.

"The Modi government has weakened the banking system by allowing the fraudsters to either continue functioning in the country or leave the country without making any efforts to recover the fraud amounts. It has also not provided enough capital support to the

"The party urges that the Modi government handles these fraudsters with an iron fist and make sure that the entire amount, that belongs to our nation, be recovered as soon as possible," he reporters.

Vallabh said the (RBI) annual report for 2020-21 points out certain alarming statistics and alleged that the failure of the Modi government in controlling infections due to the second wave of COVID-19 is denting a heavy blow again to the economy.

He said, "The March 2021 round of the Reserve Bank's consumer confidence survey (CCS) showed a worsening consumer sentiment on the back of deteriorating sentiments on general economic situation, income and prices."

On bank frauds, he said, the RBI report says the cases and amount has been on a rapid rise since 2014-15.

"In the year 2020-21 alone, the total amount of fraud was Rs 1.38 lakh crore," he said.

The total fraud amount has been increasing since 2014-15 and increased at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 57 per cent up to 2019-20, he said, adding that for the year 2020-21, when loan moratorium was in effect till August 31, 2020 and restructuring initiatives were in effect for until December 31, 2020, the fraud amount for the entire year was still Rs 1,38,422 crore, Vallabh said.

"In the last 3 years, the average fraud amount increased from Rs 10.5 crore in 2018-19 to Rs 21.3 crore in 2019-20 to Rs 18.8 crore in 2020-21. The average fraud amount was Rs 4.2 crore in 2014-15. Hence, the average fraud amount has become 4 to 5 times under Modi 1.0 and Modi 2.0," he alleged.

The Congress leader alleged that the details provided by RBI highlight a glaring reality on both the fraud and the state of the economy and it clearly vindicates the fact that the Modi government is all talk and no action, similar to all its poll promises.

"Why has the government failed to curb the in the last 7 years? What is the government doing to recover the amount involved in these  How much amount has been collected from these fraudsters who are weakening our banking system," he asked.

Central Bank of Sweden to Integrate E-krona With Existing Banking Infrastructure

Central Bank of Sweden to Integrate E-krona With Existing Banking Infrastructure

“Our role in the Swedish payment infrastructure is well established, and Tietoevry is a natural partner when exploring how to integrate a digital currency with existing banking infrastructure,” said Christian Segersven, head of financial services solutions and software development. “We are looking forward to supporting this journey towards an inclusive digital currency that will open up for innovative and secure services,” he added.

Svenska Handelsbanken, the other partner to get involved in the second stage of the e-krona pilot, is one of Sweden’s largest banks, with more than 400 branches across the country. Founded in 1871, it’s also the oldest company listed on the Swedish stock exchange. In the past couple of decades, Handelsbanken has been expanding its operations in other countries in the region as well as Netherlands and the U.K., where it has over 200 branches.

Sweden’s plan to issue a central bank digital currency (CBDC) dates back to a few years ago. Towards the end of 2020, the government in Stockholm began exploring the feasibility of digitalizing the national fiat, the Swedish krona. Arguably, the Scandinavian country has already built the world’s most cashless society. The review should be conducted within two years of its launch.

Last month, Riksbank announced the completion of the first phase of the study and released a report which highlighted the continuing decline of cash usage in the country. The central bank of Sweden emphasized the need to proceed with the project and facilitate the involvement of market actors expected to take part in the testing now and join the e-krona network in the future.

World Bank: Lebanon's crisis among world's worst since 1850s

Lebanon’s severe economic and financial crisis is likely to rank as one of the worst the world has seen in more than 150 years, the World Bank said in a report released Tuesday.

The World Bank said that since late 2019, Lebanon has been facing compounded challenges, including its largest peace-time economic and financial crisis, the spread of coronavirus and a massive blast at Beirut’s port last year that is considered as one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in history.

The crisis has worsened in recent months amid a paralyzing power struggle between the president and prime minister-designate that has delayed the formation of a new government, The Cabinet of outgoing Prime Minister Hassan Diab resigned days after the Aug. 4 blast, and the country has been without a fully functioning government since. The explosion in the Port of Beirut killed 211 people, wounded more than 6,000 and damaged entire neighborhoods.

In the face of these colossal challenges, continuous policy inaction and the absence of a fully functioning government threaten already dire socio-economic conditions and a fragile social peace with no clear turning point in the horizon, the World Bank report said.

“The economic and financial crisis is likely to rank in the top 10, possibly top 3, most severe crises episodes globally since the mid-nineteenth century,” it added.
