The special cell of the Delhi Police has successfully dismantled a module that provided bank accounts to cyber criminals. In this operation, seven individuals, including a bank employee, have been apprehended.
Modus Operandi of the Accused
According to Dr. Hemant Tiwari, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell), the accused individuals were posing as investigating officers of the police department. They used impersonated government email IDs of police officers to send emails aimed at unfreezing the alleged bank accounts.
Investigation Initiated by a Cyber Fraud Complaint
The police initiated a probe after receiving a complaint from a man who lost Rs 91 lakh to cyber criminals. The criminals had lured the victim with promises of lucrative returns in stock trading.
“The complainant was added to a WhatsApp group where the perpetrators were providing stock recommendations. He was made to open an account on www.yotemog.com and transfer Rs 91 lakh to 19 different accounts,” explained DCP Tiwari.
Freezing and Seizing Bank Accounts
During the investigation, the police froze the beneficiary bank accounts. One of the accounts, registered under the name of Gaurav Trading at SBI, had an available balance of Rs 46 lakh, which was promptly seized.
Fraudulent Unfreezing Attempts
The branch manager of SBI later informed the police that the bank had received a notice from an email address resembling a government ID, requesting the unfreezing of the alleged account. Technical analysis revealed that the de-freezing notice was sent using Proton Mail.
Arrests and Further Investigation
Based on technical surveillance and digital footprints, the accused individuals were identified. Subsequently, a raid was conducted, resulting in the arrest of two individuals, Ajay and Mohit. Following their interrogation, five more accused persons, including an SBI bank employee, were arrested.
