Senior Manager at NTPC Arrested by CBI for Bribery

On Friday, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested Vijay Kumar, a senior manager of corporate communications at India’s thermal power company, NTPC. He was taken into custody in Mumbai after allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 8 lakh. The arrest came as a result of a complaint filed by the vice-president of an advertisement company, accusing Kumar of demanding a bribe to pass bills worth around Rs 40 lakh.

NTPC’s Response and Employee Suspension

In response to the allegations, NTPC issued a statement expressing deep concern and emphasizing that the incident was an individual act and did not reflect the values of the organization. The company announced the immediate suspension of the employee in question from its rolls.

Background of the Bribery Allegations

According to the CBI spokesperson, the advertisement company had set up booths in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Puducherry on behalf of NTPC between January and February. The company submitted an invoice of Rs 40 lakh but did not include the work completion certificates, as they were to be issued by the local authorities in the mentioned regions

Bribe Demand and Negotiation

When the representative of the advertisement company approached the local authority offices in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Puducherry to request the issuance of work completion certificates, they were informed that communication from NTPC was required. The vice-president of the advertisement company then contacted Kumar to facilitate communication with the local authorities. Allegedly, Kumar demanded a bribe of Rs 6 lakh, assuring that he would ensure the bills were cleared without any hindrance. After negotiations, the demand was reduced to Rs 8 lakh.

Arrest and Search Operations

Upon receiving the complaint, the CBI set a trap in Mumbai and apprehended Kumar while accepting the bribe. He was subsequently arrested, and searches were conducted at his residence in Noida. The investigation into the matter is ongoing.
