Public Sector Banking is a service industry which have to earn profit for its owners. This profit has to be earned while doing all the social services of no profit.
While the footfall has increased manifolds and jobs like general insurance, mutual funds, ASBA and many more have been added to routine banking, compensatory staff have not been recruited so work load and work force gap has widened.
As the whole Banking is IT based, new jobs require hassle free portals which can be smoothly operated. But almost all new portals run very abruptly and staff is given formal instructions about operation in place of a well oiled training.
All clerical and officer cadres are led by representative unions which take up the issues faced by respective staff to management. It's expected from Unions that they will protect staff and provide them a conducive environment to work whenever staff face some problems.
But this is not happening.
Maximum local level Union leaders have opted different roles for themselves.
A bird view
- Not to leave the post of union once captured.
- scolding own members on behalf of authorities: sahab tumse bahut naraz hain. (Boss is highly annoyed of you).
- stay silent on all important issues where members are harassed
- take credit of every good transfer/ postings
- desist from confronting authorities on their wrong doings
- speaking the language of authorities- rather than focusing on core banking business giving undue importance to third party products and in lieu of it enjoying late night parties
- whenever any member is in problem not taking his/ her call or rather ask him/her to compromise
- essentially be photographed and give bites in all gathering/ dharna
- in place of talking tough based on hard arguments, placing sweet tongue before authorities thus staying in their good books by all means even at the cost of goodwill and career of members.
We may summarize that when the leaders need to call a spade a spade they turn diplomatic and avoid facing ire of management thus leaving them to run the institution as per their sweet will.
Most authorities have thier own agenda and local leaders are their partners in crime at the cost of Bank business and its goodwill.
And ordinary member is grind in between, working under pathetic conditions, over burdened under heavy work load, highly stressed by pressure from management and public but staff have no one to lean on where they can open their heart and get relief.
The present union leadership in all banks is not the leadership of grit, resolve and fight but it's leadership of lip service.
This needs to be changed.
