From 1991 toal 30 bank merged but no positive result has come see details list

AT present scenario in banking industry merger is priority agenda of Modi Government.

It is not for the first time that the idea of PSU Banks Merger has gained momentum. In 1991, M. Narasimham (former Reserve Bank of India governor) committee recommended that the actual numbers of public sector banks need to be reduced. There should be only 3 to 4 large banks which be developed as international banks at the top. Then there should be 8 to 10 banks having nationwide presence should concentrate on the national and universal banking services. Local banks should concentrate on region-specific banking. Later, the P.J. Nayak Committee had also recommended that state-run banks should either be merged or privatized.

The merger of SBI Associate Banks with the State Bank of India is the latest occurrence of Public Sector Banks merger in India.
